A new year brings a clean slate — and your smile deserves one too. January is the perfect time to reset your oral health routine, book the appointments you kept putting off, and give your teeth the care they need for the months ahead. Here's your no-fuss checklist for starting 2025 with a healthier mouth.
1. Book your annual check-up
If you haven't been in to see us recently, January is one of the best times to get on the books. Life gets busy fast — kids go back to school, work picks up, and before you know it another year has slipped by. A quick call or online booking now means you're sorted before the rush. During your check-up we'll examine your teeth and gums, check for any early signs of decay or gum disease, and take x-rays if needed. Catching small issues early means simpler (and less costly) treatment down the track.
2. Replace your toothbrush
The holidays are the perfect excuse to start fresh with a brand new brush. Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush (or electric head) every three months — and after illness. A worn toothbrush doesn't clean nearly as effectively, and most of us hold onto ours a little too long. If you're not sure, have a look at the bristles: if they're splayed or flattened, it's time for a new one. Opt for a soft-bristled brush, which is gentler on both teeth and gums.
3. Set one realistic oral health goal
Rather than overhauling everything at once, pick one habit to focus on this month. Floss every evening before bed. Swap out one sugary drink a day for water. Commit to two minutes of brushing, twice a day. Small, consistent changes stack up quickly and are far easier to maintain than dramatic overhauls. Our team is always happy to help you identify which habits would make the biggest difference for your specific situation — just ask at your next visit.
4. Know what a full exam includes
Many people aren't sure what actually happens at a routine dental appointment, which is partly why they put it off. A standard check-up with us typically includes a full examination of your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw; a professional clean to remove plaque and tartar build-up; a scale and polish; and a conversation about anything we notice or that you'd like to improve. For some patients we'll also recommend x-rays to check between teeth and below the gum line. The whole appointment usually takes around an hour — a small investment for a healthy year ahead.
